It seems like every day we see another ad for a charity group that would like to accept our used cars for their own purposes.  Most offer to pick up the car wherever it sits, and to take cars that don't even run in many cases.  In addition, every ad I've seen notes that the organization involved is classified by the IRS as a 501(c)(3) charitable organization.

You will want to be sure of that 501(c)(3) status, as that is what allows you to claim a deduction on your federal tax return.  In addition, you'll want to claim no more than the fair market value of the car.  If your car is worth $5,000 or more, you'll need an independent appraisal to document its value, which your chosen charity make have done on your behalf.  In any event, you'll want to verify all the details with your tax advisor before going ahead with a donation, and to maintain good records for tax purposes.

Some groups that would love to have your car are listed below.  Again, be sure to verify their status before proceeding with a donation.
